Amorphous Restarts The Machines | Interview with Gil OS

Amorphous is back in Athens for the kick off of the RSTRT The Machines series, with Blakaut and Asylum Promises!

For Gil OS and his industrial project, Amorphous a basement intense show feels most at home. Gil has been delivering intense music for more than thirty years, moving from his early, raw industrial sounds in Brazil to the dark, moody vibes he creates now in Brighton.

His music is about to fill the Crust Basement. It is a rhythmic, amorphic sound exploration of the skepticism and digital times anxiety. Now, just days away from his performance at Crust for RSTRT The Machines Vol. 1, the machines are indeed ready to be rebooted. Alongside Blakaut and Asylum Promises, Gil is set to transform a 90-person capacity basement into a landscape of cold-wave grit and industrial power.

We sat down with the man behind the oscillators to discuss about the Amorphous sound, the futre, the past and his return to Athens!

ES: Gil, you were just in Athens a few months ago for that killer show with Years of Denial. What was the first thing you told your friends back in UK about the Greek scene when you got home?

Oh man, that was such an amazing time; it feels like it was almost a year ago, time flies! I’ve told so many friends in Brazil, Germany, and the UK about Athens and its alternative scene. What impressed me the most was the number of parties, clubs, and pubs, and the energy. It reminded me of going to parties in São Paulo from the late ’80s to the late ’90s.
Athens has a dark, magnetic energy. Clubs and places like the Teddy Boy pub pulse with post-punk, gothic, EBM, industrial, and cold wave beats, raw and underground. Ancient ruins above, futuristic sounds below. I absolutely loved the nightlife, and I’m so glad to be coming back.

ES: It’s January 2026. Most people are still recovering from the holidays, but you are back in Athens "restarting the machines". Is this, powerful, start a sign of how you would like this year to be?

It felt like a birthday gift from the Greek gods! January is always the darkest month of the year, the best escape and the best start.

ES: Beside from the visit in Athens, what is coming next for Amorphous this year?

There are a few rumours about other parties, but nothing confirmed yet. I’ve started working on new tracks for a new album, so this year will probably be more of an indoor time in my home studio.

ES: The event on Sunday 25.01 is called "RSTRT The Machines". If you could "restart" one thing about the industrial scene right now, what would that be?

I’d restart the hunger for experimentation. Industrial music was never meant to be safe or predictable. I’d reboot the risk-taking, the raw edges, the sounds that challenge both artist and audience.

ES:  We know you from the Morgue Mechanism days. Do you ever find yourself accidentally writing a riff or a beat and thinking, "Damn, that sounds like 1991 Brazil"?

The early Morgue Mechanism era shaped my instincts. Certain rhythms and distorted sequences just live in your DNA. Those roots never left. But I also spent the late 2000s to 2010 in the psychedelic trance scene, so that hypnotic drive is part of the machine now too.

ES:  You’ve lived the industrial life in Brazil with Morgue Mechanism and now in the UK. When you look at the crowd in Athens, do you see more of that raw South American energy or the "colder" European vibe?

In the UK I’m almost in incognito mode. I’ve only played a few parties as Amorphous so far. The audience was great, one of those shows was opening for Hocico, but my core audience is still mostly in Germany and Brazil.
Athens surprised me. The energy there felt much closer to São Paulo; not cold weather, but cold wave and electro vibes. Intense, alive, and deeply connected to the music.

ES: Your last album, "Skepticism", was described as more dynamic. Now that you’ve lived with those tracks for a while, which one is the one that you could turn to something completely different during a live set?

I always try to mix the most dynamic tracks from my albums in my live sets. I like reshaping them, adding different intros, shorter versions, or new instrumental sections, so they can turn into something completely different on stage. It keeps the set alive, and keeps me creative too.

ES: Do you have a specific ritual before you hit the stage?

I always bring a stick of Palo Santo with me; a sacred South American wood used for clearing energy and focus. I don’t burn it anymore in venues with smoke detectors, but the ritual stays with me.

ES: What would you like to say to Athens crowd now, two days before the concert and what’s the one thing you want us to remember about this night?

Athens, I’m excited to share the stage with such talented artists. I listened to the other two projects and they’re amazing. Bring your energy, lose yourself in the machines, and remember this night as a raw, intense moment where the music and the crowd become one.

ES: THank you very much Gil. We will meet in Athens underground!
